Now that we are all back together as a family again, I decided it was time for us to get "Back to Basics."  We have gotten a little far away from holding "official" Family Home Evenings, family Prayer time, and family scripture time.  We spend a lot of time together as a family, but I know I need to teach them a little more in the areas our family is struggling with.

I don't know about your family, but my kids seem to do best when I relate the lessons we are learning to items they can relate too...whether that means movies, books, or things that have happened in our family.

Since the new Minions movie just came to our small town, we decided to go see it together as a Family Home Evening activity.  But I wanted there to be a message for my kids in the movie.  Something not to heavy, but that they could flash back to whenever they saw the minions.

We started by having the Minions over for dinner and then had a 5 minute Family Home Evening lesson before heading out to the movie.

If you want to have a Family Home Evening where the Minions teach your kids to Follow the Prophet, I'm sharing our lesson and the free printable handout.

Follow the Prophet using the Minions Family Home Evening Lesson

opening song: Follow the Prophet (Primary songbook)

scripture: Amos 3:7 "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets."

Lesson:

Tonight we are gong to see the new Minions movie.  In this movie, the minions are looking for someone to follow. They need someone to lead them.

They eventually find Gru, who while he says he's a bad guy, shows he's not by how he cares for the girls and the minions themselves.

What if Gru had been bad?  What if he had told the Minions to do things that hurt others?  Do you think the Minions would have been happy?

Who are we following?  Who are we listening to?

We should be following the prophets and our church leaders.

"A prophet is a man who talks with Heavenly Father and Jesus.  Since Heavenly Father and Jesus are not on the earth to teach us, they have prophets to help them.  Heavenly Father and Jesus teach the prophet and the prophet teaches us what we should do so that we can be blessed and happy."  (Lesson 43: We have a living prophet: Primary 1)

What are some of the things the prophet has taught us lately?

We may not always like what the prophets say and tell us to do, but we will be happy if we follow.

"There will be some things that take patience and faith. You may not like what comes from the authority of the church. It may contradict your political views. It may contradict your social views. It may interfere with some of your social life. Your safety...depends upon whether or not we follow the ones whom the Lord has placed to preside over his church."  (President Harold B. Lee, Conference Report October 1970.)

How will following the Prophet when he says (answer listed to previous question), help us to be happy?

Even when it's hard, we only have to take one step at a time to follow the Prophet and move towards happily returning to our Heavenly Father.

"Seek heavenly guidance one day at a time. Life by the yard is hard: by the inch -- it's a cinch. Each of us can be true for just one day -- and then one more after that, until we've lived a lifetime close to the Lord, a lifetime of good deeds and righteousness."  (President Thomas S. Monson)
