When I decided I wanted to turn my son's bedroom into a Minecraft room, I knew I needed to turn his light switch into a Minecraft lever switch.

I looked everywhere for instructions on how to make a Minecraft lever, but couldn't find any.  I found a few places that had made their own, but none with easy instructions that I knew I could make.

Yea, I'm a woose and Dear Hubby won't let me play with power tools, so I am limited in my skills and diy abilities.

So I turned to the one craft that I knew I could make just about anything with and figured out how to make my own Minecraft Lever switch easy and cheaply-- plastic canvas.

If you haven't ever made anything with plastic canvas, you are totally missing out.  You can do just about anything with it from making cool decorations to making items that will truly grace your home and impact your parties.  Check out all my plastic canvas patterns here if you're looking to get inspired.

Unfortunately, I didn't take very good step by step pictures as I did this.  I wasn't entirely sure it was going to work until I was done, and I was doing the whole thing in secret while my son was in the next room.

I started by sewing a rectangle out of 7 count plastic canvas with a square cut out of the center that was big enough for the light switch and eventual lever to fit.  (Plastic canvas pattern below.)

Then to make sure the switch was 3d, I sewed rectangles to fit on all four sides of the outside and in the center of the square.

To secure it to the wall, I added scraps of canvas across the back of the plate cover.  Then I stuck adhesive command strips on the scraps and pushed it onto the wall until it stuck.  (It's been on there for 3 months now and I've not had a problem with it falling off.)

For the lever, I sewed 4 replicas of the lever switch (pattern below) and overcast them together.  Then I sewed a small square and added it to the grey end.  The brown end was left open so I could secure it to the light switch.

Because we are renters, I had a hard time finding a way to add the lever switch without making it permanent.  I wanted to be able to remove the switch when it was time to move and have the light switch not ruined so we wouldn't have to purchase a new one.

Finally, I glued two Popsicle sticks to the inside of the lever switch.  This gave the lever a little more stability and also gave me something to secure to the light switch.

I added a bunch of hot glue to the inside of the Popsicle sticks and hurriedly put it over the light switch on the wall.  I had to hold it for a little bit to make sure the glue was cool and hard.

Now when it's time to leave, we can just pull the lever off and clear off the glue.  Since the light switch is plastic, it should come off pretty easy.

The Minecraft lever switch turned out super fun and has worked great.  It is one of Mini Me's favorite things about his new Minecraft room.  I like it since it's easy to stick my hand in and turn the light off easily as I'm walking by and he left the light on.

Here's the free plastic canvas pattern if you want to make your own.
