Household Command Center

I'm still working on getting myself and my home organized this year, so you'll be seeing a few more home organization tips in the next few weeks than normal.  It seems the new year is a good time to get my household organized for all the fun and parties that I want to have this year.

Keeping a family of six on track takes it's own set of organization and command skills.  Especially when that family ranges in age from 18 to 9.  It seems we always have a million different activities going on at four different levels.  Drama Queen's activities are going to be at far different levels of participation, need, and "mommy involvment" than Mini Me's.

So to help keep us all on track and on the same page, we finally got ourselves organized this year with this Household Command Center.  Since I LOVE to look at other blogger's organizational ideas, I thought maybe someone might find an idea or two from our family's.  (Is it just me or can you hear "The Circle of Life" playing in the background?)

Our command center sits on a wall in between the kitchen, dining room, and living room.  Thanks to this placement, I have no doubt that everyone in my family can see it and use it.  I don't have any more excuses that no one knew what their chore was this week or didn't know what was going on calendar wise.

My sister in law made me the family chore chart at the top of the command center a few Christmas' ago.  It has each of the kids' names on the board instead of chores.  I get a lot of questions why I did it this way, but I figure as the kids get older, their chore responsibilities change, but the kids won't.  So each of their names is on the board with a decorative tack below it.  On the tacks hang a wooden circle that I found at Hobby Lobby.  I used my Xyron to make stickers with pictures of the chores and we just rotate each chore each week.

Below the chore chart is a large picture frame with a vinyl calendar on it.  I love it because I can use dry erase markers to make a perpetual calendar that I can erase every month.  That way I don't have to buy a new calendar each year and I think it just looks so nice.  We write all of our church activities in Red, all our school activies in green, and our work schedues in blue.  Everything else is in black.  If the kids forget to write something on it, they can't complain they don't get the car that day or have the things they need.

Below the calendar, we keep a pen holder for all the dry erase markers.  We like to buy the kind that have a little bit of felt on the end so they can erase easily.  They also have their own special holder so they don't "walk" off.

Next to that is a 6x8 inch tile that I use for different projects.  I have used it as a menu planner before by listing out a week's worth of menus that the kids can pick each day for dinner.  But after coming up with the Monthly Menu Planner for our Household Management Binder, I now use it as a place to jot down items that we are out of.  Hopefully now I won't find out we are out of Peanut Butter AFTER I've gone shopping.

On the other side of the center is a cookie sheet that I turned into a magnet board.  I kept finding I had birthday invitations and little notes that I needed to keep track of, but had no where to put.  So I added a little bit of scrap paper to a cookie sheet and hung it on the command center.

I had to share the super cute magnets that I made to go on my magnet board.  I used clay and old Hershey wrappers to make these and they make me so Happy!

I found a tv stand at Goodwill that works perfect on the wall of my command center.  It holds a basket with pens and pencils, a box of tissues, and a container with Thank You notes and stamps.  This way my kids an write thank you notes as soon as they get a gift and we don't find ourselves "forgetting."

Under the cabinet I have a 3 ring hole punch so I can file my bills into my Household Management Binder. On each side are baskets with my Coupon File Folders and any mail or recipets that I need to file.

In the doors under the cabinet, I keep my recipe books and my household management binder.  I also keep my baking molds in an old coke crate.  I am not a huge fan of them there, but I use them too often to keep them too far away.  Lastly, I keep a craft project close so when I find a few minutes to work on it, I know where it is.

There's my household command center.  I hope it helps you when you are looking for new ideas and ways to organize your own home and command center.

  4. This is a great idea:) I recently got a magnetized monthly planner for my refrigerator where I do something similar but it's not as in-depth as yours. Thanks for linking up to the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Party. Your post is now pinned to the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Board. I am posting to my personal board as well:)
