Start by mixing a regular milkshake in your blender.  I like to use 2 cups of vanilla ice cream, 1 cup of milk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.  If you're using this recipe for the milkshake, you will probably need to triple this amount to get enough for a pretty milkshake.

It's easiest to mix your milkshake and then add a drop of food coloring to your milkshake.  Blend a little more to mix up the color.  I found this Neon Food Color that has some great colors for Easter in it--purple, pink, green, and blue.

Pour your first layer into glass.  You need to harden this first layer by putting it into the freezer for about 20 minutes.  If you don't, you're next layer will just mix into the drink and not give you the ombre effect.

After the first layer is hardened a little, add a few drops more food coloring to the remainder of the milkshake still in the blender.  Add as little or as much as you like to get the ombre effect.

Place your milkshake in the freezer again for another 20 minutes.

When ready, add more food coloring to your milkshake and add to the top of the ombre milkshake.  Now you have a pretty Easter egg effect in your glass!  Perfect for a sweet treat while you're coloring Easter eggs.

If you want to have the coloring go from dark to light, you can mix the milkshake up in smaller batches.  Use the original recipe above and add the food coloring so that it's darkest at the beginning.  Now you can either make a new batch of milkshake with lighter coloring, or add more ice cream and milk to lighten up the color.
