While I have most of the ideas ready for our Lego family dinner party, I felt like we needed something "more" to dress up the table.  While it would be awesome to buy some elaborate Lego piece as a centerpiece for our table, I really can't afford a $50 Lego purchase right now.

Instead, I decided to use the skills and items that I have in my home to create a Lego table runner to go down the center of the table.  It took me a while to decide how to actually do this, so I've been spending the last few days catching up on my TV shows (gotta be ready for the fall season) and sewing with plastic canvas.

I started by creating a 2 inch square "Lego piece" and made all sorts of pieces to coordinate.  I have 1x1 squares, 1x2 squares, 1x3 square, 1x8 squares, 2x2 squares, 2x3 squares, 2x4 squares and 4x4 squares.  Kind of the same things you would find in a regular box of Legos.

I found it was best to work in sections so that the table runner could be folded up when done and so it wasn't so hard to sew together.

That way I created the pieces I needed for a square section in the runner and then decided on the colors and layout of the section.  Doing it this way, you can create what ever colors and designs you want so the table runner will be unique.

It was defintiely easiest to create a 4x4 square with the center circles sewn and use that as a template when I cut and sewed everything else.  I could line up the side of the canvas and sew the circles on the new pieces and then just add the goblin stitches around with ease.

To complete the table runner, I just sewed the pieces together using a while overcast stitch.  I ended up making my table runner about 12 inches wide by 50 inches long.  That was about 6 lego 1x1 squares wide by 25 lego 1x1 squares long.

In case you decide you want to try and make one of these too, here are the basic pieces you'll need to make patterns for all the bricks.

Good luck.  If you make one, I'd love for you to share a picture on the DIY Party Mom facebook page!  Or be sure to check out all my other Plastic Canvas Patterns.
