One of the best parts of the Princess Bride movie is the unforgettable one liner quotes.  My family and I have been quoting them for years.  I can't tell you how many eye rolls I've gotten from my kids as I tell them to "have fun storming the castle" as they climb out of the car to go to school.

Or of course, everything is "inconceivable!"  Even if that word doesn't mean what we think it means.

So of course, when it was time to start decorating for our Princess Bride party, we had to include some of our favorite Princess Bride quotes as party decorations.

The easiest way to do this and to help decorate the dinner table and place settings was to create Princess Bride Quote plate inserts.

If you haven't been around our blog much, this is one of my favorite ways to dress up and personalize a place setting for a dinner party.  I purchased a bunch of square glass plates from Dollar Tree and use them for so much of my party planning.

To use these printable party decorations, simply right click on the plate insert picture you want to use.  Save the JPG picture file to your computer.  Then use your computer's print program to print the picture on to card stock. 

Cut out around the square picture, and use a little bit of tape or glue to secure the plate insert to the bottom side of your clear, glass plates.  That way you can see the picture quote, but it won't interfear with your dinner.

When you are done with dinner, just remove the plate insert and throw it away.  You can then clean the plates as usual and use them for a party decoration at your next dinner party. 

It's an easy and cheap way to have one set of plates decorate for just about any party theme.  If you can't find the theme for plate inserts here on the blog, you can always create your own, or use wrapping paper, scrap paper, or even your kid's coloring pages!

So instead, I made up a few plates of goodies and used a glass plate from Walmart with one of these cute Christmas gift plate.  You just cut out the 4 inch circle and glue it to the bottom of the glass plate.  Then your neighbor can just throw away the Christmas insert and use the plate all year long.

Happy Birthday Plate Tradition

Tomorrow is Mini Me's tenth birthday.  I can't believe it.

My oldest is planning to leave the house soon to go off to school and my youngest is a whole decade old.  I don't even want to think about how old that makes me.

As we are prepping for the "big day", I wanted to share one of our fun, and easy, birthday traditions.

After all the "Bake at 350" plate and cup projects that I've shared with you, you knew I'd need to do one for my kiddo's birthday right?

For this project I bought a boring round circle plate from Dollar Tree and used the Sharpie Oil-Based Paint Marker.  I wanted to see if the results were better than using the regular sharpie markers.

Every year Mini Me asks for a big cupcake cake for his birthday, so drawing a cupcake on his birthday plate was a no brainer for me.  But you can draw anything you want...candles, cake, balloons, streamers, the sky's the limit.

When you are done drawing, bake your plate at 350 degrees for 30 minutes to set the paint.

I have to admit, I like the Paint Markers better than regular sharpies.  The colors baked on so much brighter.  But that's just me.  Have you tried both ways?  Which way do you like better?

Orange Julius Bronco Mug

Growing up in my house, every Sunday was considered a special day.  We would go to church and come home to enjoy the day together as a family.  We didn't go anywhere or do anything, we just enjoyed the time together.  In the evening, my mother would make popcorn and my father would make his "special drink."  We would sit down and watch a show together as a family.

When I think of Special Occasions, my mind always goes to my dad's "special drink" Orange Julius recipe.  I think I love it more than the Orange Julius drinks I can get in the mall.  (The price is definitely better that's for sure!)

The Orange Julius recipe consists of 1/2 can frozen orange juice, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water, 1 Tablespoon Vanilla, and 12-16 ice cubes.  Throw everything in the blender and mix well.

But if we are going to have this special drink as part of our Super Bowl party, we can't just serve it in boring old cups as we root our Denver Broncos on.

I found these large beer mugs at Dollar Tree.  They are perfect for a party mug.  I started by printing out the Denver Bronco logo and taping it inside the mug.

Using Sharpie markers, I traced the Bronco onto the mug.  When it was all done, I baked it at 350 degrees for 30 minutes to secure it on the mug.

The Orange Julius looks great inside the Bronco mug.  It gives it enough of a orange color that you can root for the Broncos while you are drinking it, but the logo doesn't get lost in the color.  Talk about super fun!  And it goes wonderful with my Denver Bronco plate.

You could do the same thing with the Seattle Seahawks, if that's your thing.

Christmas Plate Cookie Gifts

We spent the weekend baking, baking, and more baking.  It's a good thing that I really enjoy baking treats because wow! that takes a lot of work.  But it was fun to spend the time with the kids talking, laughing, dancing, singing, and playing in the kitchen.  Another fun memory for the kids and a success towards my "give more memories" Christmas campaign.

Remember last year when I told you we were going to make Christmas plates our new holiday tradition? We decided to make our Christmas plates as gifts this year instead of just placing our annual Christmas treats on disposable plates.  It was another fun way to spend the afternoon while we were waiting for the pumpkin bread to cook and the fudge to set.

We made these with Sharpie markers and dollar store plates like we did the Halloween Spider Plates, Thanksgiving plates, and my Denver Bronco plates.  Can you tell I really enjoy the creativity and uniqueness of this idea?  Plus, I love that we are giving our friends a fun plate that they can give away next year or keep as a family "heirloom."

Monopoly Game Night Serving Dishes

You guys should know by now, that with a new party theme, comes new DIY plates.  For our Hasbro Game Night party, we needed a fun way to serve up the many treats we would be snacking on during the game playing.

What better way than with Monopoly themed serving dishes?

In some ways, these plates were pretty easy to do.  In others, they were a little more complicated than anything I've tried before.

I started out by making myself a template of the Free Parking, Chance, and Reading Railroad designs.  I grabbed the pictures off the internet, added them to my favorite design program and printed them onto card stock.

Then I cut them out and used them as a stencil for each of these plate designs.

The Free Parking plate was a little more difficult since I had the insert pieces in the template.  I thought about cutting out the tire and back window, but was feeling pretty lazy, so I just free handed it.

Then I colored in the question mark, the train, and the car with Sharpie brand markers.  On the Boardwalk and Indiana Avenue plates, I colored the top 1/4 of the plate in a block pattern.  (I did learn the hard way, that it is important to ONLY use Sharpie brand!)

When I was done, I outlined everything in black Sharpie to give it that chunky outline look that Monopoly has.  Then I added the wording to match each of the Monopoly tiles.  It took me a while to get this right, and I'm still not totally fond of my handwriting, but after redoing it several times, I just went with it.

If you find that you mess up too, I learned a pretty cool trick.  Color over your mistake with a dry erase marker and then erase it.  It will erase the Sharpie too!  Pretty useful to know!

When you are all satisfied, bake the plates for 350 degrees for 30 minutes to set the ink.

Now serve up some yummy treats for a great game night party!
