It's a cold, yucky day out there.  Winter has set in. The kids have another snow day home from school.  You are losing your mind.  What to do?

Be the hero!

Use those old, mismatched socks that you have just lying around the house to make indoor snowballs for your kids to burn off extra energy and have a great time this afternoon.

This project is super quick and easy to do.  Plus, these snowballs are made with items you already have around the house, so they are just the right price!

What to do with old socks

Gather together an old sock, a skein of white yarn, a sharp needle (with a large whole for the yarn- I used a plastic canvas needle), a pair of good, fabric cutting scissors, and some stuffing.

Make an indoor snowball with an old sock

Cut the sock into 4 inch (or so) pieces.  Depending upon the size of your sock and what kind of sock it is, will depend upon how many snowballs you get out of each one.  I got two out of ankle socks and three or four out of tube socks.

What to do with old socks

Thread your needle with about twelve inches of yarn.  Starting at one of the ends, about 1/4 inch down from the edge, sew your needle in and out of the sock creating a gathering stitch.  Make sure to leave about 2 inches of yarn at the start so you can gather the sock when done.

Go all the way around the edge of the sock, meeting up at the staring point again.

If you are using the tube or inside area of the old sock, do this at both ends to secure the sock closed.

Use old socks to make an indoor snowball

If you have two sewn ends on the sock, start on one side and gather the extra yarn.  Pull together to gather the sock and close it.  Knot it and cut off the extra edges of yarn.

If you've already done this, or if you only have one end sewn, stuff your sock with your stuffing.  You can use blanket material, batting, another sock, whatever you have lying around.

When the sock is good and stuffed, secure the other end closed by gathering the yarn together and knotting it.

These really are pretty quick and easy to make, so you can arm yourself with a bunch of them and attack the kids!
