We had an extra week of Beehive weeknight activities due to the older girls going to Best of Youth this week. So we decided to try and knock out two of our Good Works value experiences with one activity while we were in the church alone this week.
The girls have been working on their 30 days of Service this month for Good Works value experience #5, so to tie in with their service to the family, we also decided to work on Good Works value experience #2.
This experience is to "help plan your family's menu, obtain the food, and prepare part of the meals for two weeks."
We started the evening by talking about the challenges that families have when getting together and having dinner each night. We talked about how it was hard with all the activities going on in our lives for families to all be together at dinner time. We talked about why it was important that we gather together as families, especially during these busy times.
"Love at Home" from the Liahona magazine is a great place to pull some ideas and quotes from if the girls need a little help in this area.
Then we discussed some challenges to creating a healthy, happy, peaceful mealtime together. How it was challenging for moms to come up with meals that "everybody" in the house will enjoy and not complain over.
Using our Young woman Personal Progress doodle journals, I had the girls each come up with 14 dinners that they could have the next two weeks for dinner. It was easy to do this on the menu plan and grocery list pages for Good Works value 2 that The Red Headed Hostess created.
For some of the girls, it was super easy and they jotted down a long and varied list, for others it was a "little" more difficult. I think I named almost every recipe I could think of and they kept saying how they didn't like this or that. We ended up only coming up with 7 recipes and they were challenged to go home and work with their mom to create two weeks worth of meals (and to try to be more open to new meals.)
For the activity, we created a crockpot freezer meal for the girls to take home and serve to their family some time in the next two weeks. We chose to do Hawaiian Haystacks since it was a versatile meal that could be fixed up or down for everyone in the family.
We started by adding 4 frozen chicken breasts to a Ziploc freezer bag.
Using a chicken gravy mix (I like McCormick Premium Poultry Gravy*), I had the girls mix up 1 cup of powdered gravy and 5 cups of water. They stirred this up and poured it on top of the chicken in the bag. The freezer bags I bought were nice because they had a way for the bags to stand up in the freezer so when the meal froze, it was in a "chunk" and would fit in the crockpot easier than if it had frozen laying down flat.
When we were done with the chicken, we added the toppings into sandwich sized Ziploc bags. We put 1 cup of coconut into a bag, 1 cup of Chinese noodles, and 1 small can of chunked pineapple. I also had the girls put 3 cups of minute rice into a bag and then we added all the extra ingredients into another large Ziploc bag so everything was together.
The girls finished the activity by copying the Slow Cooker Hawaiian Haystacks recipe onto a paper for the recipe books that we are working on creating. (They also had a copy to put in with the dry ingredients to take home.)
