10 PVC Pipe Organizing Projects

I absolutely LOVE PVC pipe.  It is such a wonderful medium to work with when you are trying to make cheap toys or home projects.  It is also great for people like me who want to build things, but their Dear Hubby won't let them work with wood and machines due to clumsiness.  (We won't mention the Great Cheese Grater Incident where I chopped my finger off making dinner.)

So when it comes to  home improvement projects, I love PVC Pipe for making Organizing projects.  Here are a few of my favorite ideas that I have on my "To Do" list this year.

Neon Light Column Decoration

One of my favorite party catalogs to peruse during my "free" time (which means during the time I'm sitting and waiting to pick up kids from practice) is the company Shindigz.  I love the party products and fun ideas they come up with, so when I saw these Luminescent columns I became VERY envious...

but the price tag of $85.00 each nearly choked me...especially when I decided I wanted 4 of them for my daughter's party.

So I decided to make my own.

I started with an embroidery hoop, some PVC pipe from around the house, a strand of Christmas lights, and 2 yards of fabric.

I couldn't find the right type of PVC joint that I wanted, so I had to create my own.  So I took a 4 part cross joining piece and a coupling piece and tried to glue it together.  My glue didn't work too well (not sure why), so we ended up drilling a screw into it at an angle to keep it still.

I'm sure part of the problem is that I waited until the day before the party to try this and was too impatient for the glue to dry, but the screw made it more secure so it worked out good.

(UPDATE: For the other 3 columns that I made, I hot glued the top piece on and then pushed E-6000 glue into the cracks and waited.  It worked GREAT!)

Then I took 8 inch pieces of PVC pipe that I have around the house,  (my kids use PVC pipe pieces cut into different lengths as "tinker toys")  and put them into the cross pieces so they are sticking out at the top.

I sewed a pocket on one edge of neon green fabric and then down the long edge to create a circle with my fabric.  I threaded my embroidery hoop through the pocket so I had a long column of fabric.

Using a 7 foot long piece of pipe from my photo booth backdrop stash, I covered it with a strand of large white Christmas lights.

Lastly I took my fabric hoop and threaded it up the PVC pipe and over the pieces on the cross to rest.  I plan to place these on the edge of our dance floor at the party for a pretty fun, cool effect.

Craft: Epic Fail

I admit it...I'm cooked.

It's been one of those crazy days, where I haven't stopped running from the moment I got out of bed this morning.  The only time I've sat still is when I spent HOURS driving around town running errands.  It's been crazy.

Finally, about 4:30, I got home and started dinner.  While dinner was in the oven, I started working on a project for Mini Me's water birthday party this weekend.  We are going to have several different water stations and one of them was going to be a large sprinkler for the kids to run through made from PVC pipe.

I first got the idea from Come Together Kids here and since then Family Fun has a version here.  My version was going to be BIG and GRAND and the kids were going to LOVE it.  Well....this is what happens when you don't take a moment to totally read the directions, the reviews, and the "helpful hints" on a project.

EPIC FAIL!
(as my kids would say.)
Do you see how low he has to get to get any water? (pretty sad.)

I spent an hour trying to rework it to be able to maximize the water pressure so the water would even make it to the top and down the other side.

I finally got a little action on the far side and on the top, but it was still pretty pathetic.
I admit it.  I finally just let him run.  He had a ball.  He told me it was AWESOME and he LOVES it.  (I'm so grateful for my little one.  He makes my day.)

But I will have it awesome.  I will spend this evening (not moving...in my pajamas) reading all the extra helpful hints on these websites...then tomorrow...or the next day...I'll get back to it....and it will be AWESOME, or at least Super Cool.

(But don't tell him in the meantime, his Grandma and I rented him a 18 foot double water slide for the party too!  So if all else fails...he'll be in Splish Splash heaven.)

Shout Out Sunday

A few sweet ideas for your summer parties from fellow bloggers I LOVE...

Crossing the Bugger-Dixon Line shared how to make this AMAZING Golf Wreath for Father's Day.  Isn't it amazing?  What a great wreath this would make for a golf party...or what about a Graduation wreath for a high school golfer?  Or maybe a retirement party?  So awesome.  I wonder if you could even change the golf items out and put in items for other sports?  Or maybe flowers for a spring wreath?  What a great idea!

Munchkin Munchies shared these awesome Corn Dog Cookies.  Don't they look so cool?  These would be perfect to serve at a backyard BBQ picnic or summer party.  They look so real and fun.  You can't help but not to want one...or two... or more.  And as easy as they are to make, you can make that many too.

Pittypat Papperie shared a fun Soda Bottle gift container.  Have you ever tried to find a way to wrap that unique sized gift?  Or tried to find a fun way to give your gift?  How great would it be to receive it in a up-cycled bottle with some serious "bling" to it?  So fun and original!  The recipient will LOVE it!

She Wears Many Hats shared this recipe for Cherry Limeade.  I don't like soda.  I don't like carbonation, but I do love a good Sonic Cherry Limeade every now and then.  And I think my hubby could drink one every day of the year...and twice on Saturdays if I'd let him.  Fortunately our Sonic is WAY across town, but I think if I can find some of the Cherry juice listed in the ingredients...I may just have one of these waiting for him when he comes home from work.  And wouldn't it be great to have this at a summer cookout?  Yummy!

Come Together Kids shared her PVC Pipe Sprinkler.  I LOVE this idea! If you've read my blog at all, you know I love to make things out of PVC pipe (that's what I use in my backdrops and photobooth backgrounds)...so I love how easy and perfect this is for a sprinkler system.  I actually can't believe I didn't think of it!  "Mini Me" wants to have an ice cream and water party for his bday next month, so I love that I could make this and add it to my 'water wonderland'.
