My young women wanted to have a fun activity tonight and I wanted to teach them a little bit of service as we head into the end of the year holidays.  I think it's so easy for the girls to think only of themselves during Halloween and how much candy and how many treats they will get.  So I thought we would have a fun service activity tonight that would help them to look around and think about others in a small, fun way.

I decided we would make Halloween cookies in fun jars for them to give away.  The goal was to make the cookies at our activity and then sometime during the week they had to find someone who needed a smile or a pick me up and give the jar of cookies to them.  They will have to return and report on Sunday during Young Women's meeting.

Halloween Monster Sugar Cookie Ingredients

I started by purchasing 3 bags of Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix*, a package of Wilton Candy Eyeballs*, a package of Half Pint Mason Jars*, Neon Food Color*, colors of various ribbon, and some fun fabric. (I chose a fabric set from the bin at Walmart that had five different style designs in one package.)

I knew there wouldn't be a lot of time during our weeknight activity, so I made up the sugar cookie dough at home.  I separated it out into 7 plastic cups with one cup of sugar cookie mix in each one.

This made it really easy to get the girls going once we started.  I just gave each one a cup and let them start mixing up fun colors.

When they had the color they wanted, each one placed their cookie dough out on to the cookie sheet and we baked them according to the package directions.

While they were cooking, we decorated up our jars.  Each girl picked a style and used a plastic lid to create a circle of fabric.

After they had the fabric, we placed it on the mason jar with the lid bottom on the jar, then the fabric, and secured it by screwing on the outer lid.

The girls had a little trouble tying the ribbon on the jar.  I wish I had brought a glue gun to help secure the ribbon to the lid while they were tying, but I didn't think about it, so there's a suggestion if you decide to make these.  We had each girl cut out and tie a tag (available at the end of the post if you want it) with a Halloween poem that I wrote onto her jar.

The poem reads:
With all the bumps in the night
That arrive this time of year,
We want to remind you
That your friends are near.

So as Halloween comes a knocking
And the fun comes to an end,
Enjoy these Halloween cookies
From your Young Women friends.

When the cookies were done cooking, we added the candy eyes to them.  We tried adding them before and after cooking and found it worked better to add them after while they were still warm.

We did find it a problem that the cookies spread too much and didn't fit into the jars.  We ended up using the tops of the jars as a cookie cutter and trimming down the cookies.  It was still a tight fit, so I recommend bringing a slightly smaller cookie cutter to deal with that.

The little kids running the halls didn't mind eating the cookie scraps at all, so that was an easy way to let them have some without ruining our cookies.

Once the jars were all done, the girls started making plans on who they were going to give them to.  I can't wait until Sunday to see how it goes and if they were able to look around and brighten someone's day this week.

If you want to make these with your girls, here's the free printable Halloween cookie jar tag:

  1. For Halloween party now you don't need to go outside to enjoy your day because gold coast party hire is here and they can provide you inflatable jumping rides both for kids and adults size and through this you can make your home little park. And I can give you the guarantee that your kids will become very happy after getting this.
