A Thanksgiving Tree

It is not unusual to see pictures of bare trees with thankful leaves being added throughout the month of November. Every year our Giving Tree looks a little different but we always make it a central part of our lives. What kind of tree do you have?
One of the things that makes our tree different (besides its size) is its not just about counting our blessings. Its also about showing our thanks through actions. The amount of activities vary since Thanksgiving is always on a different day but this year, it consists of 4 weeks of focused thanks.

Week 1: Acknowledging our Blessings

This is the easy part and lots of fun. Cut out lots of leaves, set outs some pens and pencils, and watch the tree fill up. Our tree is special with two types of leaves (oak and maple) and lots of colors. You could assign one color per person or a type of leaf per team if you want to have a little friendly competition. My kids usually claim a certain spot on the tree. I used to make the rule of no repeats but I stopped because why shouldn't they acknowledge that blessing just because someone else already did-it is important to each of them in a different way. I use cookie cutters for my leaf templates but if you need one, here are some great ones to use.

A Letter to my Newlywed Self

A letter to my newlywed self with all the things I wish I had learned.  Don't make the same mistakes and learn with me. We can move forward from here and be the best mom, wife, and homemaker possible.
A letter to my newlywed self with all the things I wish I had learned. Don't make the same mistakes and learn with me. We can move forward from here and be the best mom, wife, and homemaker possible.

Dear Me,

You don't know me yet.  I'm you, after 21 years of marriage, raising 4 kids, and learning from the mistakes you are making right now.  I'm you, after many ups and downs and am here to tell you all the things I wish I had known back then.

I know right now you are in the bloom of early love and marriage.  You are looking at all the endless possibilities that life has to offer.  You'll have a good life.  Your kids are going to be amazing.  And in 21 years, you'll still be in love with your best friend.

But, you'll also have had many struggles that could have been avoided.   Many health issues that you can stop right now.  Many depressing moments when you could have learned more to be better prepared for the trials ahead.  And I'm here to tell you to do that.  Learn more.  Learn everyday.  Keep learning.  And then implement that learning.

Pretty soon, you'll find your self pregnant with your first child.  (She'll be wonderful! Just so you know.)  But being away from family and friends during this time will cause you a lot of grief.  You and Dear Hubby are just so young and it's hard to ask for help.  The pregnancy won't be easy, so find ways to  learn how to experience more glowing, wonderful pregnancy moments without all the stress and fatigue. Find books like this Pregnancy Companion eBook where you will get quick tools and tips to sleep better, eliminate morning sickness, reduce stress, and give her a healthy start in life. Once you have a better pregnancy, you'll feel more confident as a mom.  Because you're going to need that!

Confidence is something you have in abundance right now.  I know you think you can rule the world.  But as your kids start coming and the world starts trying to knock you down, confidence is going to be hard.  Take care of yourself.  Eat good.  Exercise.  Take time to get out of the yoga pants everyday.  I know you aren't good at these things, so find some eBooks that will help like Simply Dressed: Inspiration to Dress for the {Everyday} Ordinary Days, No Cook Freezer Meals, and since I know you and Dear Hubby like your desserts: Treat Yourself - Real Food Desserts

And once those kids start becoming teenagers, you're confidence will really drop through the floor.  Being a mom is hard.  It's probably the hardest thing you'll ever do. But it really is the most amazing thing too.  They are going to push you.  They are going to make you cry.  Sometimes hourly.  Just keep going.  Teach them those things you want them to know.  Learn those things you want them to know first.  It's okay not to know everything.  There's help out there.  Lots of it.  Blessing Kids with Bold Faith: 31 Ways to Equip Kids,  and ,The Busy Mom's Guide to Teaching Character and The Steady Mom’s Freedom Guide.  This one is a life-affirming way to relax, let go of stress, and be the best mom you can be. This eBook will teach you all the cool tips and tricks that successful moms use to strike a balance between steadiness and blissful freedom, so that you can enjoy your parenting journey (and inspire your children to become their best).

But don't forget your Dear Hubby in all this.  The kids are going to take over your life.  But don't forget he's important to.  His job sucks most days.  He needs you.  I know most days you'll want to just fall into bed at the end of the night and go to sleep.  Or just stay home and read instead of going out and enjoying time with him.  But he needs that.  You need that.  It's going to be hard when money is tight so check out this eBook, 50 Frugal Dates and My Beloved and My Friend: How To Be Married to Your Best Friend Without Changing Spouses. Both of these are great helps to keep the flame alive.  You are going to need each other even more when the kids start getting older and tear your hearts out at times.

But it's going to be okay in the end.  Keep your head on straight when dealing with them.  And make sure you do lots of family fun activities.  Even when you think you can't afford it. The park is pretty cheap and they'll love it  When they get older and they want to do more things, make sure you've taught yourself and them to be frugal and smart when it comes to money.  Become a Frugalista – Money-Saving Secrets for the Frugal Family Manage and Build a Budget That Works are both great eBooks to help you.  There are lots more to help with staying organized and on track financially so you won't get into the mess you did when the house floods.  (Don't worry, God makes that one work out for the best too.)

I know there's so much I'm telling you to learn right now that you may be thinking I'm crazy.  But education really is the best tool for the trials you have coming.  Since you aren't great at making friends and family is always too far away, eBooks and reading can change your life.

Fortunately, I found a great set of 86 eBooks that can help.  It's only available today, so go grab your copy now.  I'll thank you in 21 years.  Your kids will thank you.  Your Dear Hubby will thank you.   Go gain your education today (and it will be way cheaper than BYU is I promise!)

Sincerely,
A Little Older and Wiser Me

Find some fun reads for you and your kids with this October reading list. Here's what my 11 year old son and I read during our "down" time together.

Here's what we read during the month of October:

Together:

Eragon (Inheritance, Book 1) by Christopher Paolini
"Fifteen-year-old Eragon believes that he is merely a poor farm boy—until his destiny as a Dragon Rider is revealed. Gifted with only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and sage advice from an old storyteller, Eragon is soon swept into a dangerous tapestry of magic, glory, and power. Now his choices could save—or destroy—the Empire."

Eldest (Inheritance Cycle, Book 2) by Christopher Paolini

"Darkness falls…despair abounds…evil reigns…

Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesmera, land of the elves, for further training in the skills of the Dragon Rider: magic and swordsmanship. Soon he is on the journey of a lifetime, his eyes open to awe-inspring new places and people, his days filled with fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and nothing is what it seems. Before long, Eragon doesn’t know whom he can trust.

Meanwhile, his cousin Roran must fight a new battle–one that might put Eragon in even graver danger.

Will the king’s dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life. . . ."

"Oaths sworn . . . loyalties tested . . . forces collide.

It's been only months since Eragon first uttered "brisingr," the ancient language term for fire. Since then, he's not only learned to create magic with words-he's been challenged to his very core. Following the colossal battle against the Empire's warriors on the Burning Plains, Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have narrowly escaped with their lives. Still, there is more adventure at hand for the Rider and his dragon, as Eragon finds himself bound by a tangle of promises he may not be able to keep.

First is Eragon's oath to his cousin, Roran: to help rescue Roran's beloved from King Galbatorix's clutches. But Eragon owes his loyalty to others, too. The Varden are in desperate need of his talents and strength-as are the elves and dwarves. When unrest claims the rebels and danger strikes from every corner, Eragon must make choices-choices that will take him across the Empire and beyond, choices that may lead to unimagined sacrifice.

Eragon is the greatest hope to rid the land of tyranny. Can this once simple farm boy unite the rebel forces and defeat the king?"

Mini Me and I started this series together.  We were listening to an audio recording of the books, but when i got a little busy, he went on with out me and sped through the series.  He's actually on the 4th book right now.  He listens to them on the way to and from school. When he's going to bed, and sometimes I'll find him in his bed early in the morning listening to it.  We have to take his iPad away from him sometimes or he'll listen all night.  What a problem to have, right?

My Reads:

For All Time: A Nantucket Brides Novel (Nantucket Brides Trilogy) by Jude Devereaux

"The wedding of Alix Madsen and Jared Montgomery is a glorious affair at an elegant little chapel in the woods, followed by dinner and dancing, all while moonlight blankets the festivities in a romantic glow. While most guests are fixed on the happy couple, Jared’s cousin Graydon can’t look away from a bridesmaid, Toby Wyndam. It’s not just her quiet beauty that enthralls him or the way she makes him laugh. Toby possesses the truly remarkable ability of being able to distinguish Graydon from his identical twin brother, Rory. According to family legend, such a gift marks her as Graydon’s True Love.

But Graydon knows there is no possible way that they can ever be together, for he is heir to the Lanconian throne and is to marry a noble woman who has been chosen for him. Yet, intrigued by Toby, he asks her to help him hide on Nantucket for a week away from regal responsibilities. In exchange, he’ll assist her with planning acclaimed novelist Victoria Madsen’s lavish wedding. Since they both know their union is impossible, the pair promises that they will never be more than just friends.

But there’s more going on between Graydon and Toby than her unique power to tell him apart from his twin. At work are forces beyond their control, which are ruled by time itself. Combine that with the magical island of Nantucket, and a seductive spell is cast over Graydon and Toby. If they are to be together, they must change what once was, as well as what will be." (Amazon Snippet)

I picked up this book because it was a simple love story which is nice to just enjoy some times when you need a few moments alone.  I admit, I almost put it down several times, but kept going.  I thought it was slightly boring until Toby started having her "dreams".  They were fun and added a little bit of "magic" to the book.  I did really like that Toby was a virgin and the couple didn't jump into bed during the whole book.  It was a nice, romantic read without too much thought or sex (there is a little, after they get "married". Just FYI)

Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles, Book 2) by Marissa Meyer

"Cinder is back and trying to break out of prison―even though she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive if she does―in this second installment from Marissa Meyer.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother, or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana."

This is the second book in the Lunar Chronicles series.  I read the first one a few months ago, so it took me a while to get back in to the series.  I really like these books, but they are a little slow to start.  When I got to about 35% (Yes, I have a Kindle at it tells you how far along you are) is when I really started to enjoy the book.

I liked this fun retelling of The Little Red Riding Hood with a little of Cinder's story woven throughout.  It was a fun read and I've already started on the third book (a Rapunzel retelling ---I think.)
