Harry Potter Back to Hogwarts Dinner Party

Having family dinners with a theme is a great way to create memories and teach the children manners! This Harry Potter themed dinner party is full of fun ideas and tutorials for back to school.  After all, if you have to go back to school, you might as well take the Hogwarts Express all the way to Hogwarts.

In the past few years, I've tried to start a family tradition where we have a fun dinner party for the kids once a month.  We've really enjoyed the experience so far.  The kids look forward to these fun dinner parties and it gives us a chance to have a night where everyone practices there best manners.

We've had fun parties like our Aladdin Dinner party, an 80s Arcade dinner party, a Hocus Pocus dinner and movie party, and of course, our annual back to school themed party.

With school starting this month and my kids' being in such a big uproar with the 8th Harry Potter book that was just released, it was a perfect chance for us to have a Back to Hogwarts dinner party.

After all, if you have to go back to school, be sure to go to Hogwarts!

I've been sharing lots of Harry Potter DIY tutorials over the past few weeks, so now it's time to show you how I put them all together for our Harry Potter dinner party.

I started by placing a red tablecloth on the table and setting each place setting with one of the Hogwarts House logo plastic canvas place mats I made.  Since there are 4 of us still at home, it worked out perfectly that I had a different Hogwarts House place mat for each person.

I used the square glass plates from Dollar Tree on top of the place mats.  I usually make plate inserts with these, but left them empty so that you could see the House Logos instead.

Beside the plate is our silverware, a napkin, and the free printable Hogwarts Crest napkin rings that I shared.

Above the placemats and dinner ware, I added a large mug for some Butterbeer and a small "Goblet of Fire".  Both of the glassware is from Dollar Tree and the small dessert dish is filled with colored M&Ms in the Hogwarts House colors.

I was able to find the Red, White, and Blue M&Ms and used that as well as regular M&Ms for each of the house colors.  (I did use brown for the black in Slytherin and Hufflepuff).  If you would like to be more color perfect, you can buy colored M&Ms, but they are a little expensive.

For the centerpiece to my Harry Potter dinner, I placed three lengths of yellow ribbon down the center of the table.  On them, I placed the Funko Pops Hogwarts Express train and the printable cupcake train cars with their student passenger cupcake toppers.  And since she knows everything, I let Funko POP Hermoine drive the train instead of Harry.

On one side of the table centerpiece, I have a few of the Harry Potter books with Funko Pop Dumbeldore and Funko Pop Snape guarding my plastic canvas dragon.  I made this dragon a few years ago when I threw the Princess Party fundraiser and decorated the Sleeping Beauty table.

My only wish is that I had Funko Pop Hagrid there to help with the dragon, but maybe he'd try and play with him instead so we'll just stay with what we have for now.  (Can you tell that I really love my Harry Potter Funko Pops?)

On the other side of the centerpiece, I placed more Harry Potter books  and Funko Pop Harry watching over the Gryffindor Goblet of Fire.

To complete the table, I added lots of tea lights to light the Great Hall as we enjoy our Hogwarts feast.

At this point the table is pretty full, and looks awesome!  I debated on making a few more of the Hogwarts Textbooks like I made for the Hogwarts book wreath on our front door.  But I didn't want there to be too much clutter.  After all, we needed room for the actual feast!
