Back To School Notebook Covers

With the kids going back to school next week, we've been spending a lot of time thinking about notebooks, pens, pencils, and budgets lately.

We are having a bit of a hard time going back and forth between the "cool" notebooks with all the characters and designs, and the cost of such simple, but expensive, additions to the supplies.  Why does adding a spiral or saying to a notebook cause it to almost double in price?  I don't get it.

So we ended up settling on getting the "boring" notebooks and spiral binders, but coming home and sprucing them up.

For the spiral binder, we came home and printed off some coloring pages for Mini Me to decorate and some cool "Magic" and "League of Legends" pictures for the Daredevil.  The Perfectionist wanted something a little more subtle and cool, so we designed up a few fun saying to add to his notebooks.

For the spiral notebooks, we used the Personalized Notebook tutorial that I showed you last year to replace the covers.  For the 3 ring notebook covers, we just printed off the sayings and pictures that we wanted and added them to the front pocket of the notebook.

It was pretty simple and added a little bit of "spice" to the school supplies without any real cost.

Here's a few designs that we made if you want to try it too.

What about you?  What are you doing to keep costs down this school year?  I'd love to hear your suggestions and comments.

Coloring Book Personalized Notebooks for School

It's the Most Wonderful Time Of The Year....Back to school time.
I think I get a strange kind of "high" about this time each year.  I think it's a combination of the cheap school supplies on sale as well as knowing my kids will be going starting a whole new year with new experiences and going to school all day, really excites me.  I love it.

But have you noticed how kids all seem to want the themed notebooks and supplies?  The ones that AREN'T on sale?  And it's like the stores raise the prices on the New Direction, Princess, and Superhero notebooks to make up for the prices on the other supplies.  YIKES!

So we decided to make our own personalized notebooks this year for school.  That way, my kids can get any theme they want as well as an afternoon of coloring.

We started by purchasing a few of the cheap notebooks at Walmart.  Most of the other supplies we had on hand since this is a project I do quite often for gifts.  You might not have these, so you'll need

2 Binder Clips

Now go ahead and google search for a coloring page with the theme that your kids want.
We did one with M&M characters, one with Eeyore, and one with a fun geometric design.

Print out your color page to whatever size that your notebooks are.  Mine were 8 x 10 1/2 inches.  But double check because you don't want it too small.

Go ahead and let your kids color their page.  This should keep them busy for a while, especially if you have a yummy snack to eat while working.  I LOVED having an hour or so of no fighting.

While the kids are quietly coloring, you may want to do this next part, because trust me...it's not something you want to tackle while the kids are underfoot.  It can be a bit frustrating depending upon your type of notebook.

You need to remove the spiral from the paper and notebook.  To do this, you need to unlatch the spiral at the top and bottom of the notebook.  Then slowly "unroll" the spiral up and out of the notebook.  It's easiest if you try to rebend it so it just flows, but not all notebooks are created equal in the ease of this.

By the time you are doing un-spiraling all your notebooks, your kids will probably be done coloring.  Using your laminator (I LOVE my Xyron XRN900  for this with the Lamination Refill. It's a craft essential I couldn't live without), laminate your coloring page.  This will keep them waterproof and semi-durable. (With my kids NOTHING is completely durable!)

Now go ahead and cut out along the edge of the coloring page so the laminate is only on the page.

Now if you have a son that likes to doodle in class or doesn't finish his elaborate design, you can decide not to laminate it and just continue.  This will allow your kids to color their notebook later at their own pace.

Using the front of the original notebook, line up the top with the laminated coloring page underneath.  I like to use binder clips to secure the pages so they don't move around while I'm working.  It's not fun to have to keep re centering your pages.

Using your 1/8-Inch, Circle hole punch, punch holes through the coloring page using the notebook front as a guide.

Remove your binder clips and discard the original notebook front.  Using the coloring page as your new notebook front, line the pages all back up and re-thread the spiral through the front, paper, and back of your notebook.  This is usually a little easier than un-spiraling.

Now you have new themed personalized notebooks for your kids at a cost that won't kill the Back to School mood.

Shindig Saturday Weekly Linky Party #20

So sorry for the lack of a Shindig Saturday last week.  I had every intention of hopping online sometime during the week and writing the post, but ended up not having any cell phone or Internet connections during our vacation.  Our moments out into the "real" world, were very few and far between, so things didn't go as planned.

But we did have a good time playing with cousins...

Playing at the lake...

Visiting Howe Caverns and gem sifting...

And visiting Hersheytown!

But I will admit, I'm REALLY glad to be back home.

So back to work and the party.
Our blog of the week is...
The Exception, not the Rule who shared her Reptile Party Preparations.  Kara did such an amazing job on the treats for her party.  I am amazed.  Her invitations are so much fun and tie into the rest of the party perfectly.  These cupcakes are DIY and look like so much fun.  I'll bet the kids LOVED playing with the plastic lizards after eating the cupcakes.  I know MY boys are craving these while looking over my shoulder.  It looks like a little boys dream party.  (And those bananas are definitely calling MY name!)

Our party favor of the week..
Our Candy bar notebooks made from real movie theatre candy boxes.  These notebooks have 80 sheets of lined paper inside an up-cycled candy box.  This is a perfect treat for the candy lover to keep in their purse, beside the phone, or in their school locker!
Now, let's party!

Shindig Saturday Weekly Linky Party #14

It's been a crazy week here...last Saturday was supposed to be my "day off".  My husband's work has a BIG Softball tournament once a year where they play tournament games from 7 am to 7 at night.  They have the BBQ going all day and there are bounce houses for the kids.  We usually set up our Easy-Up and just "CHILL" all day watching the games and enjoying the company.

Instead I spent the day running and at the ER.
NOT FUN.

My hubby decided to play catcher on a team this year and during the second game, one of the batters came running into him and lowered his shoulder right into my husbands knee.  Totally hyper-extended it and too my hubby out.

We spent the day at the ER trying to figure out how bad his knee was.  They x-rayed it and determined it wasn't fractured, but couldn't determine anything beyond that due to how much pain he was in.  So I've spent the week "baby-ing" my dear hubby.  And let me tell you, that's ALOT of work.

So it seems everything has taken so much longer to do this week.  Everything is so much harder.  Sometimes I think I don't realize how much he does for me and around the house, but when he can't walk or drive or do much, I'm left with it all.  And that's hard.

But enough about my hard week....the winner of this week's Baseball Cake Party Boxes is

For Such a Time as This who shared her recipe Homemade Cheeze Its.  These look so yummy.  My hubby LOVES Cheeze It's but I'm so bad about buying them.  He and the kids can go through a whole box in a very short time and those boxes are so expensive.  I love that Jennifer shared how to make our own.  The recipe looks pretty easy and doesn't have anything I'd have to run to the store for...everything is already in my cupboard or fridge.  A real plus when I'm cooking because I am so lazy when it comes to food.  I can't wait to go try these.

If you are looking for a lot of good recipes to try, you really need to check out For Such a Time as This.  There are alot of good recipes on her blog from Cinnamon French Toast (my family will LOVE this as an addition for our Sunday brunch) to Key Lime Pie (a personal favorite of mine that I never make) to Homemade Chocolate Syrup (how great would it be to save money there by making your own?!?!)  You really need to check out all these great recipes...I know I'll be printing off a few!

Thanks Jennifer for stopping by and sharing our treat with us.  If you'll email me I'll get your boxes out ASAP.

This week's Blog Party favor is
This notebook is made from a REAL  movie theatre sized candy box.  Inside the box is 80 sheets of lined notebook paper for you to keep notes.  It's a perfect size and a great conversation piece beside your phone, in your purse, or at your desk!

Gift Idea Week: Altered Composition Notebook

A useful gift is always one of the most appreciated gifts you can give! So giving a cute composition book which can be used as a notepad, a journal, an address book, or idea book is a great idea!  You can also use this idea to give a mini composition book which fits perfect in a purse, a car, or beside the telephone for a fun "thinking of you" gift.

Start by taking a regular composition book.  You can find these at most stores in the office supply aisle.  If you're thinking ahead, you can pick these up for $0.25 during the Back to School sales at Walmart and other stores.

Now find your favorite paper and grab your Modge Podge.  You can also use your tape gun or permanent cartridge on your Xyron machine, but I'll be using Modge Podge today.  (It's my friend this week!)

Cut two of the papers for the front and back of the book at 7 inches by 10 1/2 inches.

Modge Podge the front of your composition book with a thick coat of glue.

Lay your paper up against the edge of the black border making sure to center it on the notebook.  You will have a little bit of paper hanging off three of the edges, but this is okay!  Be sure to press the paper down securely to adhere it to the glue on the notebook.

Open up the book and trim the corner in a V-pattern.  (Not where my scissors are, they just got in the way.)  Cut where the edges start to round.  It's helpful to score the edges of your paper along the book line so it's easier to fold if you have heavy paper or card stock.

Modge Podge the edges of the book where the paper will fold over.  It's easiest to work in sections so that your Modge Podge doesn't dry before you are ready to fold.

Start with the corners and fold them in.

Fold the bottom up and then the side.  You will need to place a little bit of Modge Podge in the corners to make sure the paper glues down onto the corner and bottom edges.

To make the book look more "finished" cut a coordinating piece of paper 7 1/2 inches by 9 3/8 inches.  This size will allow you to see a little of the front paper around the edges, so if you don't want that, re size it bigger or smaller.  When your paper is cut, Modge Podge the inside of the cover and place the paper inside making sure to press securely.
Let the paper dry.

If you like your paper alot, you can leave it like it is and give as a gift.
But if you have some talent, or purchase some cute paper crafting accents, you can embellish your altered composition book to match your gift recipient or any theme.

Here are some really cute examples from fellow bloggers...

(Don't you just LOVE the side tabs? Such a great addition!)
